I recently sat down with a couple of friends in HOL for a little coffee break and I realized just how stressed we all were. Instead of laughing and joking as we always do, we spent an entire hour just complaining about the amount of pressure we all were under.
At that moment, as much as the conversation was not all rainbows and sunshine, I realized that I was not the only person feeling a little under the weather, regarding not just school but this whole “I have to be a responsible adult who has it all figured out†thing. And suddenly I went from feeling blue to feeling a little less blue! Believe it or not, this was indeed a highlight for me.
Now I know you must be wondering where I’m going with this, but there is a message in here, which I believe we all will benefit from. Just go along with me for a second.
For those of you who are away from home for the first time who might be missing home a little, to those of you who happen to be in your final semester and to everyone else in-between, yes you too! You are doing just alright! Believe me.
No one has it all ‘figured out’, so find comfort in the fact that you are not alone in this sense. Literally, this campus has thousands of students going through the exact same things you are.
So find yourself a support system, join communities on campus who will assist in making things just a little less stressful for you.
TRU provides so many academic support structures on campus as well as online, like the Writing Centre in Old Main, with people who sit and eagerly wait to assist students in areas they might be struggling in.  We have a Language Learning Lab, believe it not, for the sole purpose of helping to improve student’s vocabularies.
There are various clubs where students can get a little more involved in activities away from ‘just school work’, which honestly can get a little bit boring at times.
I mean we have an entire Olympic sized pool available, for free, to all TRU students at TCC. I encourage you to take a break from all these draining pressures some days and just go for a dip. A little workout has always proved to release happy hormones. This is not an opinion people. This is actual science! So that is proof enough that it must be good for you.
Lastly, don’t be too hard on yourselves. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. So you sure as heck won’t have everything figured out today. And if you still keep on finding yourself feeling under the weather, drop by the Wellness Centre to reboot and start from one again.
Now before I leave you be, do me one small favor and drop those shoulders, remove your tongue from the roof of your mouth and take five deep breaths. Feel better? ☺ I know right.
Never forget to take care of yourself! Also, be kind to yourself, always.
